Netherby Hall House

Netherby Hall in Cumbria is an outstanding grade II* mansion house, steeped in history from the Roman times to the modern day. Set in the heart of the debatable lands, between England and Scotland, Netherby Hall is an historic property that has stood for 2000 years. The house is built on the site of a Roman fort that may date back as far as 80 AD and the Roman invasion of Scotland.

The Walled Garden

Netherby Hall gardens covers approximately 36 acres and consists of a 1.5 acre walled kitchen garden, with herbaceous borders, a Victorian pleasure ground, woodlands with many fine specimen trees, lawns with Azaleas and Rhododendrons and a wildflower meadow, all set in more than 200 acres of designed landscape bordering the river Esk just before it flows out into the Solway Firth.

The walled garden is run in the traditional way, producing herbs, fruit and vegetables for the table and flowers for cutting. The new glasshouses are Victorian replicas, but with biomass heating linked to an electronic climate control system, with heated beds and benches for the all year- round production of micro veg and other salad crops.

Victorian Stables

The newly restored Victorian stables consist of four loose boxes and ten stalls. During your visit to Netherby Hall you can venture into the stable areas to get a glimpse into how a Victorian stable is run, interact with the grooms on site, and muck in if you really wanted too. On display will be carriages from a private collection to view. Our Estate manager Ken Ruthven will be on hand if you have any questions on the restoration, or day to day running’s of the stables.

Lunch will be included on this day, served in the Orangery.
